Una versión difundida, aludía a que cobraría una importante cifra en dólares por cada actuación.
Lo trajo al país, el cantante Palito Ortega, transformado en empresario y productor.
Sinatra, tenía en ese momento 52 años.
Quizá su voz no era la de otros años. Esta mostraba ya una coloratura algo cascada. Además, tenía algunos Kg de más que modificaron su silueta y hasta clásico su andar plástico por el escenario. No tenía tampoco, la agilidad de antaño.
Pero su carisma, al que ayudaba su personal sonrisa, le permanecía fiel.
Es que los años como las penas, siempre dejan huellas. Y más aún, a los que viven demasiado intensamente.
Ya era abuelo, cuando nos visitó pero, la mirada de sus ojos azules, todavía subyugaba a muchas mujeres.
Fue Sinatra, un hombre que tuvo todo, quizá hasta una porción de felicidad. Perdóneseme la ironía.
Su pobreza de origen –había nacido en un modestísimo hogar de padres italianos- le dejó, quizás, alguna cicatriz espiritual.
Por eso, ya millonario, seguía acumulando riqueza.
Lo llamaron también del cine. Y a los 30 años –ya rico y famoso- triunfó también como actor. ¡Y como actor dramático!.
Dirigido por Fred Zinemman, filmó la película: “De Aquí a la Eternidad”, y ganó en 1954 el Oscar al mejor actor de reparto.
Pero siguió cantando. Y grabando. Y en este rubro llegó a las dos mil grabaciones.
Cuando Sinatra cumplió 70 años, con cuatro matrimonios frustrados, y huellas visibles en su rostro gastado por las noches interminables y con su físico deteriorado por su vida desordenada, sintió y expresó que su vida había sido un fracaso, aunque su público le suponía una total felicidad.
Vivió todavía 12 años más, hasta los 82 años.
Opinaban antiguos amigos, que habían dejado de serlo, que Sinatra, había abandonado a sus reales vínculos de la juventud y que en su ambición desmedida, se había acercado a mafiosos y criminales, con alguno de los cuales estaba, incluso asociado.
Se hizo dueño también de un casino en el Estado de Nevada, pero su amistad con un conocido jefe mafioso; y alguna denuncia, hicieron que el gobierno le revocara la licencia.
Sinatra recordaba siempre con nostalgia su primer matrimonio con Nancy Barbato, hija de un modesto obrero siciliano, la única mujer a la que había realmente amado y a la que abandonó, para casarse con la estrella; Ava Gardner, alcohólica y violenta como el cantante.
Había casi olvidado a sus dos hijos de su primer matrimonio.
Tuvo, en definitiva, muchos supuestos amores, que sumados, no llegaron a ser un amor.
Cantó también con artistas de otra generación que la suya, en el mismo estudio de grabación o gracias a la tecnología, desde lugares distantes.
Y por eso hoy lo podemos escuchar en dúo con Bárbara Streisand, o Liza Minelli o Tony Bennet e incluso con Luis Miguel.
Pero el tiempo, ese nudo corredizo que a todos nos oprime, sin prisa, pero también sin pausa, terminó venciendo a este gigante artístico. Y un 15 de mayo de 1998, hace mas de 20 años, se llevó también a Frank Sinatra.
Y un aforismo final para este mito de la canción norteamericana:
