Ernesto Sábato. POR JOSENAROSKY
“Para algunos hombres, dignidad y vida son sinónimos”.
Dos meses antes de cumplir sus muy fecundos cien años de edad, el 30 de abril de 2011, fallecía el escritor Ernesto Sábato.
Además de ser considerado con Borges, como los dos más importantes escritores argentinos del siglo XX, fue un verdadero idealista, dueño de una dignidad… irrenunciable.
En este aspecto, era muy modesto frente a la grandeza de otros, fueran escritores o científicos. Pero arrogante frente a la bajeza o la indignidad.
Y en cuanto al idealista que fue Sábato, se sintió muy seguro de sus ideas, pero al mismo tiempo, respetuoso de las ajenas.
Él entendía que cuando por la mejor causa, se mata a un niño, muere la causa. Un hecho de su vida: Recibido en la Facultad de La Plata de Dr. en Física, tuvo como uno de sus profesores al Dr. Bernardo Houssay, nuestro Premio Nobel de Medicina.
Era el alumno preferido de Houssay, quien lo becó, para trabajar en radiaciones atómicas en París, con la hija de Madame Curié, también Premio Nobel.
Llegado a Francia “sintió” que no era la ciencia su verdadera vocación. Prácticamente desaprovechó la beca, con ausencias a las clases y acercándose diariamente a círculos literarios de París. En ese momento, llegaba la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Decidió regresar a La Plata, donde residía. El Dr. Houssay se molestó tanto por el desaprovechamiento de la beca, que hasta le negó el saludo por largo tiempo.
Quince años después, Sábato, ya un prestigioso escritor, se encontró con su viejo profesor en una reunión.
Houssay, con la modestia de los grandes que no necesitan mostrar su grandeza, se acercó a Sábato y le dijo:
-“Tengo una deuda con usted, Dr. Sábato”
-“No Dr. Houssay. Yo le debo a usted la posibilidad de estudiar en París, que torpemente desaproveché”.
Y el científico le respondió:
-“Se equivoca. Tuve la suerte que usted no eligió la ciencia”. Y agregó:
-“Casi privo a la Argentina de un escritor tan brillante, como digno”. Y un abrazo selló el reencuentro.
Y un hecho, que me tocó vivir con el escritor desaparecido.
Lo conocí personalmente en una mesa redonda que ofrecimos en el escenario del Teatro Cervantes, aquí en Buenos Aires. Integraban también el panel el citado Sábato, el escritor Uruguayo Mario Benedetti y otro escritor argentino cuyo nombre no recuerdo. Y también quien les habla. En el agasajo posterior, Sábato me entregó una tarjeta personal. Hacía algunos meses yo había escrito mi primer libro “Si Todos los Hombres…” con mucha suerte inicial. Decidí enviarle un ejemplar a su domicilio…
Una semana después recibí una carta de él. Bueno, más que una carta, una sola línea. Decía:
-“Gracias por el envío”. Ernesto Sábato.
Tiempo después, resolví escribirle, manifestándole, que dado que mi libro contenía solamente aforismos, le pedía que dedicara 5 minutos a leer cualquier página y me enviara su opinión. Dos o tres días después recibí en mi domicilio dos hojas manuscritas, que resumiéndolas decían: -“Leo sólo lo que considero que debo leer, que no es precisamente aforismos, género que no me interesa.
Si leyera cada libro que me envían los nuevos escritores como usted, no tendría tiempo para leer los que considero necesarios leer. Claro. Por supuesto no me cayó muy bien.
Un año después –lo vi al escritor en un programa de TV, donde vertía expresiones conceptuosas sobre varios de mis aforismos. Entonces, lo comprendí.
Porque lo había juzgado por la forma de su carta y no por el contenido de la misma. Obviamente no tengo el prestigio de Ernesto Sábato, pero recibo varios libros semanales. Y me resulta imposible leerlos todos.
No tengo la autenticidad de Sábato, pero transformé, al comprenderlo, mi molesta sensación al recibir su primera carta en valoración por su autenticidad.
Que mostró en toda su trayectoria vital en sus casi 100 años de vida y en las diferentes actividades que realizó.
Y a esa sinceridad y a su conducta insobornable, tan valiosa como su brillante trayectoria literaria, le dedico este aforismo.
“Siguen naciendo opresores. Pero siguen naciendo, idealistas”.
