Bonavena “Cuando suena la campana el boxeador queda solo; hasta el banquito le quitan”. Por JOSE NAROSKY
“Las altas cumbres suelen estar muy cerca de los abismos”.
Decía el boxeador Oscar “Ringo” Bonavena: “Cuando suena la campana y se apagan las luces del estadio, el boxeador se queda muy solo; hasta el banquito le quitan”.
Acaso por esa razón, Oscar Bonavena o “Ringo” –como lo apodaban sus familiares-, renegó siempre de los managers y prefirió promover y publicitar él mismo sus propias peleas, pagando únicamente los servicios de un segundo.
Tal vez porque conocía de sobra el medio pugilístico, comenzó su verdadera campaña profesional en los Estados Unidos.
Allí está el dinero grande. Y él decía textualmente:
-“Estoy para cosas grandes”.
Tuvo el mejor automóvil, la mejor ropa, viajes, alhajas.
Eso sí, sin olvidar nunca su origen humilde, el Parque Patricios, Huracán, los ravioles de Doña Dominga, las necesidades de los suyos.
Ringo no anduvo con medias tintas. Paseó sobre un elefante por la Quinta Avenida neoyorquina.
Tuvo a maltraer a Casius Clay (Muhammad Alí), siendo este campeón mundial.
Derribó dos veces a Joe Frazier.
Llenó de bote a bote el Luna Park, encendió polémicas, fue querido y también envidiado. Claro. La envidia es un impuesto al éxito. Y además fue adulado y ridiculizado, casi simultaneamente.
Como todos los personajes que salen de lo común, Bonavena habló mucho. Y también dio que hablar.
Hasta que su vida se apagó en equívocas circunstancias, una madrugada de mayo de 1976.
El mismo día, ¡qué casualidad!, Víctor Galíndez –otro grande del box- en una épica demostración de guapeza vencía en Sud África a Richie Kates. Es que cuando una luz se apaga otras luces comienzan a brillar. Quizá, para que el mundo jamás quede en tinieblas.
Y casi a la misma hora de la corona mundial para Galindez por su triunfo, Ringo moría asesinado por un matón a sueldo, a las puertas del Mustand Ranch, en un sórdido burdel de Reno, Nevada, por un disparo que le atravesó el corazón.
Después, páginas y páginas escritas, y numerosas anécdotas también vinculadas con Bonavena.
Es que todo lo que rodeó la vida de Ringo fue distinto, pintoresco, exagerado.
Ni siquiera su trágico final resultó común.
La experiencia no se puede comprar, y cuando un hombre o un boxeador la consigue, suele ser tarde para que le sirva. Es que aprendemos a vivir cuando ya hemos vivido.
Tal vez por eso Bonavena vivió tan de prisa.
A los 33 años había hecho el viaje de ida y de vuelta. Vertiginosamente. Volando en avión o conduciendo su propio y siempre espectacular automóvil.
La chispa de Bonavena no tenía límites. Tampoco sus ocurrencias y sus extravagancias.
Y pudo darse todos los gustos, menos ser campeón mundial de box.
Su temperamento desbordante, explosivo, pudo incluso pasar por encima de las barreras de clase, impuestas a su alrededor. Con hombres mas civilizados, que no por eso significa que eran mejores hombres.
La personalidad de Bonavena apabullaba. En la esquina de su casa y en cualquier país del mundo. En un cabaret o en la Presidencia de la Nación.
Y no fue casual que ante su cuerpo yacente en el Luna Park, desfilasen miles de hombres anónimos, pobladores de la tribuna y algún ex primer mandatario, rivales, artistas, periodistas.
-“No importa que vengan a silbarme. Lo importante es que vengan”.
Sin embargo, todos, admiradores y detractores, se conmovieron ante el televisor, aquel 7 de diciembre de 1970, a la medianoche cuando Bonavena concretó su mejor actuación, la enorme hazaña de sucumbir recién en la última vuelta frente a un Cassius Clay, pleno de poder y brillantez.
Ese día, luchó hasta el final. Con sus pies planos y sus imperfecciones técnicas. Pero, respaldado por un coraje sin medida que asombró a expertos y legos. Una valentía –sin obviar sus virtudes que obligó a respetarlo, a comprenderlo y a considerarlo- el mejor peso pesado en la historia del boxeo profesional argentino, salvando quizá la figura de Luis Ángel Firpo, el famoso “Toro Salvaje de las Pampas”.
Su vida, su ascenso vertiginoso y su muerte prematura,-tenía solamente 33 años- inspiraron en mí este aforismo:
“Las altas cumbres, suelen estar muy cerca de los abismos”.
