Cesar Milstein. Por José Narosky
“Sencillez no es simpleza”.
Solo tres científicos argentinos obtuvieron el Premio Nobel. El Doctor en Química Federico Leloir, lo obtuvo obviamente en Química. El Dr. Bernardo Houssay –médico- obtuvo el de Medicina.
Pero el tercer científico, que no era médico, sino, Doctor en Química, obtuvo también, el premio Nobel en medicina.
Me estoy refiriendo al Dr. César Milstein, que nació en Bahía Blanca, en 1927. Tenía 16 años y cursaba el cuarto año del Colegio Secundario en su ciudad natal.
Él mismo, relataba, –era realmente modesto- una anécdota con el profesor de Química. En un trabajo práctico en el laboratorio de la escuela, siendo todavía el alumno César Milstein, le hizo –respetuosamente- una sugerencia al profesor, relacionada con un experimento que estaban realizando.
-“ Descubro que he repetido un error durante 20 años. Te felicito. Te auguro que vas a ser Profesor de Química”.
Pero otra vez se equivocaba. Porque ese alumno sería, mucho más –con el devenir del tiempo- pues llegaría a obtener, nada menos que un Premio Nobel.
César Milstein ya recibido de Dr. en Química, terminó su carrera a los 29 años-. Trabajó como investigador en el Instituto Malbrán de Buenos Aires, hasta los 35 años.
Después, cesantías de compañeros y la escasez de presupuesto, más una beca que obtuvo para perfeccionarse en la Universidad de Cambridge, en Inglaterra, lo hicieron trasladarse a ese país, donde terminó radicándose definitivamente.
Explicaré, muy rudimentariamente, por cierto, el hallazgo que le valió la obtención de su galardón.
Logró identificar, determinados anticuerpos que “pelean” si cabe la expresión, contra los virus y bacterias que se introducen en nuestro organismo y nos enferman.
Diría y pido perdón por tan simple resumen, que enriqueció la posibilidad de inmunizarnos contra determinadas infecciones.
-“Es como una batalla-“, decía. “Frente a los soldados del mal que nos atacan, introduciendo en nuestros organismos virus malignos atenuados, reforzaremos las fuerzas del bien que nos defienden y que se llaman anticuerpos”.
Y una anécdota final que define cabalmente su humildad y su equilibrio.
El día 8 de octubre de 1984, el Dr. Milstein celebraba en Londres su cumpleaños número 57, con varias personas de su amistad. En esa circunstancia, llegó a su domicilio un telegrama notificándole que había obtenido por sus investigaciones, nada menos que el Premio Nobel de Medicina de ese año 1984.
Sus amigos y familiares, lo abrazaron emocionados. Y le pidieron que dijese algunas palabras.
-“Estoy contento, porque podré cambiar mi viejo auto.” Y agregaba con la serenidad de un filosofo: “Recién, antes que llegara el telegrama estábamos hablando de la muerte del joven torero, Paquirri”, que era el seudónimo del famoso torero español, Francisco Rivera, a cuyo padre conocía, ya que era un eminente investigador español. “Creo que es una falta de respeto a su memoria, interrumpir solamente por un premio -¡se trataba nada menos que de el premio Nobel¡-, interrumpir el modesto homenaje al recordarlo”, sostuvo Milstein.
El torero de 37 años, había fallecido, herido por un toro durante una corrida, ese mismo día.
Y esta breve anécdota, que creo se explica por sí sola, nos muestra la hondura de sentimientos del investigador argentino.
El Dr. César Milstein fallecería a los 75 años, un 24 de marzo de 2002.
Su talento, y una voluntad inclaudicable que lo obligaba a trabajar 13 o 14 hs. diarias en su laboratorio, me hizo crear este aforismo:
“Para flotar, es necesario sumergirse”.
