Domingo Faustino Sarmiento por José Narosky
“Un solo brote de justicia, justifica arar un desierto”.
Agonizaba el año 1813 y junto a Los Andes Argentinos, el derrotado ejército patriota se deshacía en marchas y contramarchas, en pausas y en retrocesos.
Bajo la lona de su cuartel de campaña, su jefe, el general Manuel Belgrano, sentía como una herida personal las derrotas de Vilcapugio y Ayohuma.
Y allí estaba, en su carpa, cuando la voz de su asistente solicitó su permiso.
-“Un arriero quiere verlo, mi general”, le informó.
-“¿Quién es?”, le preguntó Belgrano.
-“Dice que se llama José Clemente Sarmiento, mi General.
Es un campesino”.
Belgrano salió de su carpa y observó a un arriero que traía como humilde ofrenda, una recua de mulas.
-“Son para sus soldados, mi General. Se las traigo desde San Juan”, agregó el padre de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento.
Belgrano sintió que la emoción le hacía temblar la voz.
-“¡Gracias, paisano!”.
No pasó mucho tiempo y ese arriero José Clemente Sarmiento dejaba el arreo de mulas para vestir, orgullosamente, el uniforme del ejército de José de San Martín.
Mientras tanto, en San Juan, la mujer del arriero, doña Paula Albarracín, trabajaba incansablemente.
Silenciosa y humilde, Tejiendo sin pausas, pudo ayudar a construir la humilde casa donde vivía.
Era una casona baja, de anchos muros y soleado patio por donde corrían cuatro hijas mujeres y un solo varón.
Era una carga nada fácil, que había que sostener para seguir viviendo, en tanto su esposo peleaba por el futuro de la patria nueva.
El único hijo varón se llamaba Domingo Faustino Sarmiento y sería el futuro presidente de la República.
La madre lo crió con la convicción de verlo algún día clérigo y cura de San Juan.
Pero el chico, con sus ojos vivaces, se miraba en la imagen de su progenitor. Para el jovencito, don José Clemente, su padre, representaba el alma viva de las luchas por la independencia.
El niño Domingo Faustino, lo admiraba por la casaca de vistosos colores, por los galones dorados, por el sable brillante de oficial granadero del General San Martín con el que militaba.
Ahora avancemos 130 años en el tiempo.
Treinta de junio de 1943. En la República de Panamá se reunieron los Ministros de Educación de prácticamente todos los países de América. Y se decidió que los 11 de septiembre de cada año se celebrase el Día Panamericano del Maestro.
Porque un 11 de septiembre falleció un gran maestro argentino. Y ese era el homenaje de un continente a la figura de domingo Faustino Sarmiento, un hombre multifacético.
Porque fue político, militar, maestro, periodista, senador, Presidente de la República. También escritor, un gran escritor.
Creó más de cien Bibliotecas Populares, fundó el Colegio Militar de la Nación, el Observatorio Astronómico de Córdoba, que fue el primero en Sudamérica.
Mientras ejercía la Presidencia, repetía:
-¡Hay que hacer una Nación!.
Sarmiento tenía treinta y siete años cuando se caso con una viuda, que a su vez era ya madre de un varón llamado Domingo Fidel.
Será el Dominguito de sus sueños.
Sarmiento se encariñó totalmente con él y le dió su apellido. Y con este hijo adoptivo llegaron juntas la luz y las sombras. Porque dieciocho años después, en la batalla de Curupaitÿ, moría Dominguito.
Y la muerte de un ser muy querido no mata, pero marca.
Es que la vida tiene luces y sombras. Pero las sombras suelen ser definitivas. Y Sarmiento, con cincuenta y cinco años cumplidos –viviría hasta los setenta y siete años- jamás pudo superar ese dolor.
Es que “hay días que se cierran para no abrirse”.
Y aunque dos años después asumía la Presidencia de su país, esa herida que no se le notaba no se había borraba y le sigue doliendo.
Dos años antes de morir, escribe otro libro: “La Vida de Dominguito”. Después de haber escrito “Facundo”. Este libro, “La Vida de Dominguito”, muestra una faceta opuesta a la del hombre combativo, fuerte, temperamental.
Aquí estaba el Sarmiento tierno, sensible al que no le avergüenzaba aceptar sus defectos. Le avergüenzaba tenerlos…
Cuando a los sesenta y cuatro años dejó la Presidencia, es designado Director de Escuelas de la Pcia. de Buenos Aires. ¡Siempre el Maestro que llevaba dentro de sí!.
Y dijo al asumir este cargo, obviamente de menor jerarquía que el anterior:
-¡Gracias!, me han ascendido de Presidente de la República a Educador. Y a este argentino acertado o equivocado, según la apreciación de cada uno, nadie podría negarle que luchó por ideales.
Y así como muchos miran sin ver, él pudo ver, sin mirar.
Además por saber perdonar a otros, el se perdonó menos a si mismo.
Fue un ejemplo de dignidad. Porque todos pueden seguir la corriente. Pero, pocos pueden enfrentarla.
Claro que su sentido de la dignidad lo hizo sufrir.
Pero esa misma dignidad le sirvió de consuelo.
Y un aforismo final para esta personalidad tan especial que fue Domingo Faustino Sarmiento.
“La dignidad dificulta el camino. Pero el digno no aceptaría otro”.
