Un día de octubre de 1782, nace en Génova, Italia, Niccolo Paganini.
Fue ya en vida –privilegio de pocos- un ídolo. En su patria y en Europa. Se convirtió en leyenda, estando aún vivo.
Aunque físicamente enfermizo, llegó a vivir 57 años.
A los 9 años dio su primer concierto oficial en Génova, su ciudad natal y la de Cristóbal Colón. ¡Tenía sólo 9 años!.

El padre, un modesto comerciante, pero de buen sentido musical, intuyó su genio… Y lo obligaba a estudiar muchas horas diarias, llegando incluso hasta el castigo corporal.
Pero era tal el talento natural de Paganini, que éste no perdió su vocación por el violín.
Sus conciertos se hicieron más frecuentes.
Era un adolescente de 16 años y su éxito le reportó tempranamente mucho dinero. Entonces abandonó para siempre su casa paterna.
Fue también –y tempranamente- un gran compositor.
Con recordar solamente su “Moto Perpetuo” y “La Campanella”, dos verdaderas joyas musicales, y ya tendremos una pauta de su enorme talento como creador de música.
Había algo en su arte, en su personalidad que electrizaba al público cuando ejecutaba su violín. Lo transportaba realmente.
Es que el verdadero arte nació para que el hombre pueda volver al paraíso. Y eso sucedía con los espectadores de sus recitales.
También jugaba un papel en ese hechizo con la gente, su aspecto pálido, casi cadavérico. Sus mejillas hundidas, su apariencia algo diabólica.
Inspiraba una mezcla simultánea de admiración y de temor.
A los 23 años ya era el primer violín en la corte del duque de Lucca. Todo le sonreía.
A los 25 años se lo consideraba el músico más famoso y también, más adinerado de Europa.
Claro que su pasión por el juego, digámoslo, contribuía a disminuir sus ganancias.
También las mujeres constituían para él más que un elemento de atracción normal, una pasión casi enfermiza.
Tocó solamente en Italia hasta pasados los 40 años. Luego Austria, Alemania, Francia, Inglaterra, etc..
En todos los países el mismo éxito total.
Es que los grandes del arte, siempre derriban fronteras.
Tenía 45 años cuando una molestia en la laringe comenzó a atormentarlo. Se estaba incubando un cáncer en su organismo.

Vivirá aun 12 años más. Hasta un 26 de mayo de 1840.
Poco a poco su voz se va apagando. Pero sigue no sólo actuando, sino también, componiendo febrilmente, como si intuyera su verdadero mal, que los médicos le habían ocultado.
Sentía quizá, que crear belleza es vencer a la muerte, o postergarla por lo menos.
En una ocasión se rompió –durante un concierto en París- una cuerda de su violín. Él siguió con las otras tres cuerdas, despertando el asombro del público.
Es que su virtuosismo parecía no tener límites.
Y finalizo con una anécdota que protagonizó en Londres, durante una gira y que lo define en el aspecto humano.
Posiblemente podrá parecer que el hecho que relataré lo descalifica. Pero pensemos que en el gran artista importa más la creación que sus debilidades.
Amigo del efectismo y de lo artificial, concibió con su secretario, una pequeña trampa para el público inglés.
Él poseía un valiosísimo violín Stradivarius para sus actuaciones.
El día anterior al concierto compró un violín de ínfima categoría. Su secretario todavía no entendía nada. Su plan era este:
Paganini se presentaría en el escenario con el violín de mala calidad. Justo antes de comenzar el concierto, alguien –contratado previamente por él- produciría un ruido exagerado en su butaca. El concertista, exasperado aparentemente, le arrojaría su violín (el violín ordinario, claro está) que preparado a ese efecto caería en el pasillo del teatro, y se destrozaría totalmente.
Entonces Paganini gritaría, dando la espalda al público: ¡necesito un violín!. ¡Cualquier violín! y su secretario entonces le alcanzaría su Stradivarius, su verdadero violín.
El público esperaba, por esta circunstancia, una actuación más opaca que las habituales, pero Paganini tocando en realidad su propio instrumento, logró la brillantez de siempre.
