Y quiero rescatar brevemente un resumen de uno de sus relatos.
En él, un extraterrestre decide visitar el Planeta Tierra.
Y un congreso de hombres superiores eligió para recibirlo y agasajarlo al hombre más sabio e inteligente del país.
El encuentro entre ambos, el extraterrestre y el terráqueo se realizó en un bosque, en un hermoso día de primavera.
El extraterrestre, luego de saludar al sabio, observó una hilera de hermosos árboles que le llamaron la atención. Los tocó y le dijo al sabio:
-“¡Qué linda y armoniosa gente es esta!”. Y agregó:
-“Aunque están inmóviles, se mueven sus hojas y nos traen una brisa que nos refresca. ¿Qué estarán pensando de nosotros estas personas?”, terminó diciendo el extraterrestre.
Y el sabio le respondió:
-“¡No!. No son personas y por ello no piensan. Tienen vida, sí. Pero son simplemente árboles”.
-“¡Ah!… Comprendo”.
Siguieron caminando y varios jilgueros posados en una rama, los arrulló con sus gorjeos.
Y otra vez el extraterrestre dijo:
-“¡Qué hermoso sonido para nuestros oídos!. ¿Por qué nos canta esta gente? .¡Qué gentiles son!. ¿Qué pensarán?”.
Y el sabio contestó:
-“No son gente. Cantan sí, pero no piensan”.
– ¡Ha Claro…
En otro lugar –siempre en el relato de Stevenson- rosas de distintos colores les ofrecieron belleza y fragancia. Y el extraterrestre dijo refiriéndose a las rosas:
-“¿Qué buenas son estas personas? Nos ofrecen tan agradable perfume y no común hermosura. ¿Y quién los dirige?”.
-“Le insisto, dijo el sabio. No son personas y por eso no piensan en nada, ni nadie los dirige. ¡No tienen inteligencia!.
Lo llevaré a conocer gente que piensa”.
Y se dirigieron a la Capital de ese país, alejándose del bosque donde se habían encontrado inicialmente.
Y llegaron finalmente a una ciudad muy populosa. Donde la gente caminaba apurada. Automóviles con sus caños de escape enturbiaban el ambiente. Bocinazos. Discusiones. Dos personas estaban agrediéndose a puñetazos.
Y dijo el extraterrestre:
-“Estas no son personas tampoco, ¿verdad?. ¡No piensan!”.
-“No. Está equivocado”, le respondió el sabio.-“¡Esta es la gente que piensa!.
-“Pero, ¡no serán estos los inteligentes!, dijo el extraterrestre”.
-“Sí. ¡Estos lo son!”, respondió el sabio.
Entonces agregó el extraterrestre:
-“¿No le parece a Ud. que los verdaderamente inteligentes son las flores, los pájaros y los árboles que hemos visto en el bosque?. Y agregó: “Mejor vuelvo a mi planeta. No alcanzo a comprender la supuesta inteligencia de los humanos”.
Creo que este relato simboliza la incomprensión del hombre con su hermano hombre.
Es que estamos tan empeñados en que los demás nos comprendan, que no tenemos tiempo de comprender a los demás. Y como el extraterrestre del cuento, necesitamos mucho ruido para valorar el silencio.
Recordemos también que en este mundo sediento en que vivimos, no debemos negar el agua.
Y este relato de Stevenson, simultáneamente cruel y reconfortante, trae a mi mente este aforismo:
